How to use the Shutter Health Analyzer

For the tool to successfully extract your camera data, you must upload an unedited file transferred directly from your camera memory card. Photo editing software like Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Capture One permanently strip hidden manufacturer metadata during the export process.

Unsupported Systems

• Canon (CR2, CR3): Canon intentionally removed shutter count data from EXIF files on almost all models released after 2011.
• Older Micro Four Thirds: Early Olympus and Lumix bodies keep this data hidden in internal diagnostic menus instead of image files.
• Edited Exports: Files exported from mobile apps or desktop editing suites will return an error.

Understanding Camera Shutter Count and Lifespan

Checking your camera shutter count is exactly like checking the mileage on a used car. Every time you take a photo using the mechanical shutter, delicate physical blades physically snap open and closed across the image sensor. Over thousands of actuations, these mechanical parts experience friction and metal fatigue.

What is a Shutter Rating?

Camera manufacturers rigorously test their shutter mechanisms in factory environments. An entry level DSLR might be rated for 100,000 clicks, while professional flagship bodies are often tested to survive 400,000 to 500,000 actuations. This rating is an estimated failure threshold, not a strict expiration date. A camera rated for 150,000 clicks might easily survive to 300,000, or the shutter could unexpectedly fail at 90,000.

Buying and Selling Used Camera Gear

When shopping for second hand camera equipment on marketplaces like eBay or Facebook, the shutter count drastically dictates the fair market price. If a camera has consumed less than 15% of its total lifespan, it is generally considered like new internally. If a body has crossed 85% of its rated actuations, you should demand a heavy discount to cover the eventual cost of a shutter replacement.

Keep in mind that silent electronic shutters do not involve moving physical parts. If a photographer exclusively shoots video or uses the fully electronic shutter mode, the mechanical count remains frozen regardless of how many actual images are captured.
